At the invitation of the African Union (AU) and the Government of Ethopia, the second African Climate Summit will be opened in Addis Ababa today. Germany will be represented by Dr. Bärbel Kofler, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), whi chairs the German delegation, and Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary for climate action. The Summit will therefore focus on adaptation strategies, financing for the green transformation in Africa, and support for new growth markets.

German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan, who is on a visit to the Middle East, has pledged support for the people in Gaza. The planned assistance will consist of temporary shelters, repair work on water pipes and schools, and cash-for-work programmes for short-term jobs. The measures are part of an “Early Recovery” package meant to enable the rebuilding of Gaza once a permanent ceasefire is in place.

Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan leaves today on a visit that will take her to Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. This visit is a continuation of her committed efforts for the future of Gaza and for the stabilisation of the entire region.

During her visit to South Africa to attend the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting, Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan announced an agreement with the South African government today on the expansion of renewable energy in South Africa. A KfW loan of 500 million euros aims to facilitate further reforms to South Africa’s energy sector that will create a conducive environment for private investment.

Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan started on her first visit to South Africa. A key topic will be the close economic cooperation between Africa’s largest economy and Germany. In addition, Alabali Radovan will be attending the G20 Development Ministers meeting from 24 to 25 July.

Germany presented its third Voluntary National Review (VNR) today at the United Nations in New York. At the annual High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, representatives of governments, civil society, the scientific community and business come together to evaluate progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda.
